Technology Requirements for Adjuncts

In order to conduct online class sessions and office hours, adjunct instructors teaching in the College of Public Health are required to have an Internet connection and computer equipment, which meets the minimum specifications described below.

A laptop is recommended but is not required. If you already own a desktop/laptop, please check to be sure it meets the technical specifications below. In particular, it is important that you have a camera and microphone to be able to conduct online course sessions and office hours. Headphones are recommended but are not required.

It is important to make sure your desktop/laptop has sufficient capacity for the software packages required, particularly, if you are instructing in the MPH and HIM programs.

• Operating System:
  • Windows computers: Windows 10 64-bit (recommended)
  • Mac computers: MacOS 10.12 or higher (Windows 10 64-bit via Bootcamp may be required, depending on the program in which you are teaching)
• CPU: Intel i5 Dual Core or greater/equivalent
• RAM Memory: 4 GB or greater (8 GB is recommended)
• Hard Drive: 256 GB or larger (Solid State Drive is recommended, if purchasing new)
• Audio and video:
  • Laptops: Integrated webcam and microphone
  • Desktop computers: Integrated or external webcam and microphone
• Internet connectivity:
  • Stable Broadband internet such as Verizon FiOS or Comcast Xfinity
  • At least 5.0 Mbps Upload/Download internet speed is recommended for sending HD group video using Zoom
  • Mobile hotspot is not recommended as a primary internet source
  • Laptops: Wi-Fi 802.11 g/n (or greater)
  • Desktops: Fixed connection into wall-mounted Internet port
• Screen Size: 13” or larger (15” is recommended)
• Screen Resolution: 1920x1080 (1080p Full HD) or higher
• Video out: (if planning to bring into campus classrooms)
  • Windows laptops: HDMI (or USB-C to HDMI, if no other option)
  • Mac laptops: USB-C to HDMI

• Although a solid state drive is not required, if purchasing new, solid state drives offer significant performance improvements and stability. If a system without a solid state drive is selected, the drive speed should be 7200 RPM. Larger drives are normally slower at 5400 RPM and are not recommended.
• If you are viewing datasets and multiple items on the screen at the same time, a 1080p display should be the minimum. 1080p is sometimes classified as FHD or Full High Definition. A 4k or Ultra HD display is higher resolution than 1080p and is recommended.
• If you are purchasing a new computer, an Accidental Damage and Extended Warranty with rental coverage is strongly recommended.
