HIPAA VPN - Mac
This guide should only be followed if one of these two scenarios are true:
- You need to access/mount network drives without remotely connecting to an office computer
- You need to remotely connect to another Mac computer
If neither of those are true and you only need to remotely connect to a Windows computer, please use the Remote Proxy service (https://its.temple.edu/remote-proxy)
Create a new location
This part only needs to be completed once.
If you have the “Self Service” app in the applications folder, click on the button that says “HIPAAVPN location”
Wait a few moments
Proceed to Connect to VPN
If you do not have "Self Service" app in your applications folder
- 1. go to System Preferences
- 2. Network
- 3. wifi in the left area should already be selected but if not click wifi and click apply
- 4. click on Location in the upper section and choose edit locations
- 5. click the plus symbol
- 6. name the new location something useful like "hipaa-proxy"
- 7. click done
- 8. in the bottom right area click Advanced
- 9. in the upper area click Proxies
- 10. click on web proxy and put in ersatz.temple.edu and in the next field put 8080
- 11. click on secure web proxy and put in ersatz.temple.edu and in the next field put 8080
- 12. click ok
- 13. click apply

You are now ready to connect to the VPN
Connect to VPN
If all went well, right now your computer is set to the hipaa-proxy location Nothing works on this location unless you are connected to HIPAAVPN first
To connect to HIPAAVPN
- go to the apple menu in the upper left corner and change location to Automatic
- go to hipaavpn.temple.edu
- log in and authenticate with Duo
- if needed install citrix receiver
- wait until the VPN is connected
- once connected go to the apple menu in the upper left corner and switch location to hipaa-proxy
- citrix will complain that the connection was interrupted but will re-connect after a moment.
- you should now be able to access web sites normally.
Connect to shared drive
Connecting directly to share drives
- In the Finder click go —> connect to server
- In the box that comes up enter smb://tucloudhfs1.tu.temple.edu/cph
- After a few moments your share drive should connect.
Connect to work computer
To connect to your work computer
- You will need the IP address. It will start with 10.16.number.number
- IT can help you find your IP address if needed.
You will need to purchase nuoRDS
- $36.75 and must be purchased with department P-card
Remote Mac to another Mac
Using VNC
- In the Finder click go —> connect to server
- In the box that comes up enter vnc://(your-computer-IP)
- Log in using Temple credentials
Using nuoRDS
- Make sure nuoRDS is installed on the work Mac
- Install remote desktop 10
- Create a new connection using the IP address of your computer
- log in using your temple credentials
Remote to Mac from Windows
- Make sure nuoRDS is installed on the work Mac
- Click on the windows icon in the bottom left corner
- In the box that comes up type the word remote
- An application called remote desktop should be in the list. Click it
- Create a new connection using the IP address of your computer
- Log in using your temple credentials
When you are done working remotely proceed to Disconnect
Disconnect
In order to prevent citrix receiver from changing settings on the computer we have to do these steps in exact order.
- If you are connected to the share drive, go to the Finder and eject it
- From the apple menu change the location to Automatic
- Go to your web browser that has the page for hipaavpn.temple.edu
- Click your name and choose logout
