Panopto Sharing Best Practices

Please upload course videos to your Canvas course's Panopto folder. Do not upload videos directly to your Canvas files area, as videos can take up a lot of space and fill up your allotted Canvas course storage space. Uploading to Panopto, however, puts your videos in the Panopto cloud and they are available to the students via the links in your course. Since the videos are in the Panopto cloud, this does not fill up your Canvas course space.

To Upload a video into your course's Panopto folder:

  1. Click on Panopto Video on the left side course navigation menu. This is your Panopto Video course folder.
  2. Click on Create
  3. Click Upload Media
  4. Drag and drop files or click to locate files to upload on your computer

Uploading videos into your Panopto Video course folder gives all students in the class access to view the video. If you need to make videos available to a specific student only, we recommend creating a subfolder and moving the video into the subfolder. Then you will need to adjust the subfolder settings to grant access only to that student. Please see our video walkthrough of this process or email cphithelp@temple.edu for assistance.

There are four use cases for how you might want to share recordings with your class.

1. Immediately available to all students

We will set class capture recordings to publish to the Panopto Video area of your Canvas course in a subfolder called "Class Capture Recordings." This folder will be available to all students in the course and recordings will become immediately available for student viewing after they have finished processing.

2. Immediately available, but only shared with specific students

We will set class capture recordings to publish to the Panopto Video area of your Canvas course in a subfolder called "Class Capture Recordings." We will remove permission from all students to view the folder and if you provide the accessnet of the student who will need access to the folder, we can grant them access to the folder or show you how. If different students students need access to different recordings, we suggest creating subfolders within the "Class Capture Recordings" folder and sharing those subfolders with the students who will need access to them.

3. Not available to anyone until the instructor reviews them

We will set class capture recordings to publish to the Panopto Video area of your Canvas course in a subfolder called "Class Capture Recordings". The folder settings will be so that all class capture will not be available to anyone. This gives the instructor the opportunity to review them and make edits before making them available to the class one by one.

4. Not available until the instructor reviews them and then only shared with specific students

We will set class capture recordings to publish to the Panopto Video area of your Canvas course in a subfolder called "Class Capture Recordings." We will remove permission from all students to view the subfolder and if you provide the accessnet of the student(s) who will need access to the folder, we will grant them access to the folder or show you how. When a class capture recording has finished processing, it will be "not available to viewers" until the instructor goes into the subfolder and makes the recording available to the viewers of the folder.

When embedding videos on pages, announcements, etc. always use the LTI tool to do so. This process ensures that the videos are correctly shared with the students in the course.

Please see our video walkthrough or follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the page you would like to embed the video on
  2. Click on the plug icon along the rich content editor (if you don't already see the green Panopto icon there)
  3. Click on View All
  4. Scroll down and click on Panopto from the list
  5. Select a video to embed from the list or upload or record a new video to embed
  6. Click Insert
  7. The video will now be embedded on the page
  8. Click Save when done editing the page

If you have a video that you would like to share with a colleague, there are a few ways you can share it with them. If they are a Temple user, you can add them as a viewer to the video and send them a link. If they are an external user, you can make the video available to anyone with the link (unlisted).
